Mission

The John Howard society of New Brunswick is a group of people who promote just, peaceful, and safe communities by understanding and responding to the problems of the criminal justice system.


Objectives

1. Identify Circumstances, examine and promote policy and legislation that creates and maintains just, peaceful and safe communities

2. Recommend policies which recognize the limits of the criminal justice system to prevent crime while identifying and promoting the benefits of alternative prevention initiatives

3. Promote citizen responsibility for the justice system

4. promote practices which improve the experience of citizens when they com into contact with the criminal justice system

5. In co-operation with John Howard Branches, work with people who have come into conflict with the law.


Functions

In fulfilling these objectives, the John Howard Society of New Brunswick is responsible for the following:

1. Advocacy which includes active, planned and frequent contact with the media, key government policy analysts, advisors and politicians, and committees with respect to the promotion of objectives of the John Howard Society of New Brunswick

2. Research related to the development and dissemination of briefs and positions on matters of provincial importance which incorporates positions of member societies in the furtherance of the objectives of the John Howard Society of New Brunswick

3. Communication with member societies to promote a coordinated consultative process which allows the provincial society to monitor and respond to the needs of members and facilitate joint projects between the John Howard Society of New Brunswick and its members;

4. Community education which focuses on the sharing of information among members and the promotion of the objectives of the John Howard Society of New Brunswick to the members through board development activities and broad based community education initiatives which promotes the role of the John Howard Society throughout New Brunswick.

5. Coalition building through a coordinated process of information sharing and the dissemination of materials with other like minded organizations

6. Resource development and stewardship initiatives to strengthen the ability of the provincial office to further the objectives of the John Howard Society of New Brunswick
